Iran fired a wave of ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv, reportedly fitted with cluster munitions, signaling a sharp escalation in the Middle East conflict. Iranian officials said the attack was in retaliation for the killing of a senior security figure in a strike attributed to Israel. The missiles illuminated the night sky over central Israel, causing damage to buildings and resulting in the deaths of at least two civilians. The use of cluster weapons raises serious humanitarian concerns, as they disperse smaller explosives over a wide area, some of which may remain unexploded and dangerous long after impact.

This strike is part of a broader surge in violence since early 2026. Iran has launched attacks on Israeli cities as well as U.S. and allied installations across the Gulf region, including targets in Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. These actions follow a series of assassinations of Iranian officials, which Tehran has vowed to avenge. In response, Israel and the United States have carried out airstrikes within Iran, focusing on military and nuclear sites.

Although Israeli defense systems have intercepted many incoming missiles, the scale of attacks has increased pressure on these systems. Civilians on both sides continue to face growing risks as casualties and damage rise. The conflict is also affecting global energy markets and heightening international concerns, with diplomatic efforts failing to de-escalate tensions so far.
