In a video message released after his discharge, Clinton appeared somewhat weakened but remained positive as he described his progress and expressed relief at being back home. The former president said he was deeply touched by the messages he received during his hospitalization and praised the doctors, nurses and staff who treated him. Clinton specifically thanked the medical team at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange County, California, where he received treatment for approximately six days.
“I was so touched by the outpouring of support I received during my stay in the hospital,” Clinton said, expressing appreciation to those who had reached out to him and his family. Clinton’s hospitalization followed a urological infection that spread into his bloodstream, according to an aide familiar with his condition. The aide said the former president was recovering and had not experienced septic shock, a severe and potentially life-threatening complication associated with serious infections.
Clinton’s Treatment and Recovery Progress
Clinton was admitted to the California hospital after reportedly experiencing fatigue while visiting friends in Orange County. His hospitalization was not related to COVID-19, according to his spokesperson at the time. Doctors said Clinton responded well to treatment, which included intravenous antibiotics and fluids. Alpesh Amin, chair of the Department of Medicine and executive director of hospital medicine at UC Irvine Medical Center, said Clinton’s fever and white blood cell count had returned to normal.
Amin also said Clinton was expected to return to New York to complete his prescribed course of antibiotics. Medical teams in California and New York remained in communication throughout his treatment. The former president was initially placed in an intensive-care section of the hospital for monitoring and privacy, although aides said he was not receiving intensive care because of a life-threatening deterioration in his condition.
Following his release, Clinton said he was glad to be home and described himself as being on the road to recovery. “I’m really glad to be back home,” he said, adding that he was feeling better and looking forward to resuming his activities.
