Fourth Teen Shot In D.C. After WHCD Shooting

A fourth teenager in 10 days was shot in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. The tragic shooting comes after a gunman attempted to attack the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night. Around 12:17 p.m., police officers from the MPD were called to the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue to look into a shooting. At about 12:17 p.m., they went to Avenue because of a report of a shooting. When the police got there, they found a teenage boy who had been shot. The police say he was awake and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police haven’t said anything about a possible suspect or a motive yet. The shooting happened less than a day after another teen was shot and killed on Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue in Northeast D.C. near H.D. Woodson High School. The police are still looking for a suspect in that case.

Last Tuesday, April 14, two boys, 12-year-old Mhilo Young and 14-year-old Tyale Coates, were shot and killed in the 700 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE. The boys were both from Northeast D.C. KIPP DC said that Coates was an 8th grader at KIPP DC Valor Academy and that Young used to be a KIPP student. This news comes after Cole Allen, the accused gunman behind the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attack, was armed with multiple weapons, according to law enforcement officials who briefed reporters after the incident. Authorities late Saturday after the attack identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.

Officials said Allen allegedly rushed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton while carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives before being stopped by the U.S. Secret Service and other officers. The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was underway Saturday night with President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members, journalists, and other guests in attendance when gunfire erupted near the ballroom entrance. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as attendees took cover under tables while security personnel moved quickly toward the threat. Reports noted that several guests initially believed the noise was caused by falling dishes before they realized shots had been fired.
