Iran’s New Supreme Leader Issues First Statement With Alarming Threats

In a tense moment during an escalating regional crisis, Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued what is believed to be his first public message since assuming power after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei. The statement was broadcast on Iranian state television on March 12, but it was not delivered by Khamenei himself. Instead, a news anchor read the message while a still photograph of the new leader appeared on screen.

The lack of video or audio from Khamenei immediately sparked speculation internationally about his physical condition. In the televised message, Mojtaba Khamenei struck a defiant tone, promising that Iran would seek revenge for those killed in the conflict. He vowed that the country would not hesitate to avenge the “martyrs” of the war, emphasizing that retaliation would extend beyond the death of his father to include all Iranians who had lost their lives in the fighting.

The statement also praised Iranian military forces for resisting what he described as unjust attacks. Khamenei expressed gratitude to fighters defending the nation, saying their actions had blocked the enemy’s advances and demonstrated Iran’s strength and resilience.

He further warned that Iran could take aggressive economic and military measures if the conflict continued. Among those measures is the strategic use of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Iranian authorities have threatened to restrict or disrupt traffic through the strait, which has already contributed to sharp increases in global oil prices and heightened concerns about energy supply disruptions.

Khamenei also suggested the possibility of opening additional fronts in areas where adversaries might be vulnerable, hinting that the conflict could expand beyond its current scope. At the same time, he acknowledged the personal impact of the strike that killed his father, noting that several members of his own family also died in the attack.

Conflicting reports about the new leader’s health continue to circulate. Some officials claim he suffered only minor injuries, while others speculate he may have been more seriously wounded. The decision to broadcast his statement through a presenter rather than in his own voice has only fueled further debate.
