Schiff Could Face Fines, Prison Time if Classified Leak Allegations Proven

New allegations from a Democratic whistleblower, supported by recently declassified FBI interview records, are raising serious questions about the conduct of Adam Schiff, the Democratic senator from California. If the claims are substantiated and prosecutors decide to pursue charges, the controversy could pose major legal and political risks for the longtime lawmaker.

The accusations date back to Schiff’s tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, when he served as ranking member and later chairman of the House Intelligence Committee during investigations into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. According to reporting by Just the News, a whistleblower who worked for Democratic members of the committee for more than ten years told the FBI beginning in 2017 that Schiff authorized the leaking of classified information to journalists in order to harm then-President Donald Trump.

The whistleblower claims Schiff told staff during an internal meeting that the group would leak intelligence damaging to Trump and that the disclosures could ultimately contribute to efforts to indict the president. The source said he objected during the meeting, warning that such actions would be unethical and potentially illegal. According to his account, colleagues reassured him that the leaks would not be traced back to them.

The same whistleblower also alleged that Schiff believed he had been promised the role of director of the Central Intelligence Agency if Hillary Clinton had won the 2016 presidential election. He further suggested that fellow California Democrat Eric Swalwell may have served as a channel for the alleged leaks. The whistleblower said he was later dismissed from his position after raising concerns with federal authorities.

Despite the allegations, the whistleblower says the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not take action, even after he repeated his claims to agents years later. Former U.S. attorney Brett Tolman has noted that unauthorized leaks of classified information can carry severe penalties, including fines of up to $250,000 per count and potential prison sentences that could reach decades depending on the circumstances.

Schiff has previously denied leaking classified material and has characterized similar accusations as politically motivated attacks on his work overseeing intelligence matters.
