85-year-old man was arrested for traveling 110 mph in a 45 mph zone
An 85-year-old man from Leesburg, Florida, has been arrested in Lake County after deputies alleged he was involved in a high-speed street racing incident on U.S. Highway 27.
According to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, William Bosworth was driving a gray Nissan sports car that was clocked at approximately 110 mph in a 45 mph zone. Deputies said they observed two vehicles-one of which was a red Corvette-traveling at speeds reaching 125 mph and 110 mph respectively, which they believed to be engaged in street racing near U.S. Highway 27 and County Road 33 around 11:40 p.m. on June 12. Authorities said a deputy initiated a traffic stop after activating emergency lights and pulled over Bosworth’s vehicle.
He was subsequently detained at the scene and placed in handcuffs without incident. Body camera footage captured the interaction between Bosworth and the deputy. During questioning, Bosworth denied participating in a street race, stating that another driver had swerved toward him.
Bosworth’s Account of the Incident
He claimed his speed was an attempt to avoid a potential collision. “I was just having a little ride in my favorite car,” Bosworth reportedly said, while maintaining that he was not racing but trying to distance himself from the other vehicle. Despite his explanation, deputies arrested Bosworth on charges of excessive speeding and participation in a vehicle race.
He faces two traffic-related charges stemming from the incident. Officials have not released information regarding the identity or status of the other driver involved in the alleged incident.
