Trump Drops Name For Next Supreme Court Nominee

Former President Donald Trump said on Friday that he was considering Republican Senator Ted Cruz as a possible nominee for a future seat on the Supreme Court of the United States. The comment came during a rally in Corpus Christi, where Trump praised Cruz as “an amazing guy.” He joked that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress would likely confirm Cruz quickly because many lawmakers would be happy to see him leave the Senate. However, Cruz had previously said last month that he was not interested in such a nomination.

At the same time, the Supreme Court issued a 6–3 ruling blocking Trump’s use of global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Shortly after the decision, Trump signed a new order from the Oval Office imposing a 10 percent global tariff using a different legal authority.

Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana said the ruling may have little political impact. He noted that about $300 billion in tariff revenue had already been collected and placed in federal accounts while trade deals negotiated under that authority remain in effect.

Trump later criticized the court on Truth Social, arguing the decision unintentionally gave him more leverage in trade negotiations. He initially imposed a 10 percent global tariff but later increased it to 15 percent while continuing to defend his trade strategy.
