Trump House Owner Hospitalized After Violent Assault in Southern California
A Southern California Army veteran known for his highly decorated “Trump House” is fighting for his life after a violent assault outside his home, according to authorities and his family.
Kerry Sheron, 69, was critically injured Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street in Escondido. Police responded at about 2:15 p.m. following reports of an assault in progress and found Sheron suffering from severe injuries. A utility worker who witnessed the confrontation intervened and helped restrain the alleged attacker until officers arrived, authorities said.
Sheron was transported to a trauma center, where he remained in critical condition in an intensive care unit. His wife, Maria Garcia, later gave a grim assessment of his condition, telling reporters that she did not expect him to survive. Garcia also raised concerns that the attack may have been connected to the political symbolism of their home.
Family Describes Home’s Political Symbolism
The property, widely known in the San Diego area as the “Trump House,” is covered with American flags, patriotic decorations and displays expressing support for President Donald Trump. The residence has attracted considerable attention over the years, drawing both supporters and critics. Garcia said the family has remained unapologetic about displaying the flags and described her husband’s military service as an important part of their identity.
Authorities have arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler in connection with the attack. Butler was charged with attempted murder and is being held at the Vista Detention Facility, according to the information provided by authorities. Police said Butler fled the area following the assault but was subsequently located and arrested.
A bystander who intervened was also injured during the incident. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation, and authorities have not publicly established a motive. Accounts from an individual who said they knew Butler have introduced another possible dimension to the investigation.
Investigation Into Attack Continues
The friend described Butler as a Navy veteran who had struggled with serious mental-health issues and had become increasingly paranoid and unstable. Those claims have not, however, been established as an official explanation for the attack. Investigators will ultimately have to determine what led to the confrontation and whether any political motivation was involved.
The possibility of a politically motivated attack has already prompted reactions from elected officials. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., called for a “full and immediate investigation” and argued that supporters of Trump have increasingly faced political violence. Such claims remain part of the broader public debate surrounding the incident.
Police have not confirmed that Sheron was attacked because of his political views or the displays outside his home. For Sheron’s family, the immediate concern remains his condition. The veteran’s heavily decorated residence, once known primarily as a conspicuous expression of patriotism and political support, has now become the scene of a traumatic and deeply personal crisis.

Investigators are expected to examine witness accounts, physical evidence and other available information as they work to establish exactly what happened before, during and after the assault.
