Charlie Kirk Fatally Shot at Utah Valley University as Investigation Unfolds
OREM, Utah — Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during a student-sponsored event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025, triggering a major law enforcement investigation and widespread reaction across the country.
Kirk, 31, was speaking at the outdoor campus event when he was shot at approximately 12:23 p.m. Mountain Time. The FBI later confirmed that the attack occurred while Kirk was addressing attendees and said the suspected shooter had positioned himself on the rooftop of a nearby building overlooking the event area. Kirk was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting immediately transformed the university gathering into a chaotic crime scene. Students, attendees and witnesses were confronted with the sudden violence as law enforcement officers rushed to secure the area and begin searching for evidence.
Federal and local investigators quickly launched an extensive operation. The FBI said agents responded within minutes and began working alongside Utah state and local authorities to identify the shooter, establish a timeline and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Investigators recovered what they believed was the weapon used in the shooting — a high-powered bolt-action rifle — from a wooded area where the gunman had fled. Authorities also collected forensic evidence, including footwear impressions, a palm print and forearm impressions from the rooftop area.
The FBI appealed to the public for photographs, videos and other information that could help identify the person responsible. The bureau offered a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of those responsible.
Within roughly 33 hours of the shooting, authorities announced that a suspect had been taken into custody. FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators had received thousands of leads and emphasized that the investigation would continue even after the arrest.
Kirk’s death prompted an immediate response from political leaders, supporters and opponents of his views, with officials broadly condemning political violence. His killing also renewed questions about security at public political events, particularly those held on college campuses where speakers routinely engage audiences with sharply differing political perspectives.
As founder of Turning Point USA, Kirk became one of the most recognizable conservative activists of his generation. The organization built a significant presence on college campuses, where Kirk frequently participated in debates and discussions involving politics, free speech and contemporary American issues.
His death left his family, including his wife and children, grieving and deeply affected the university community where the attack occurred.
The FBI has continued to describe the case as an ongoing investigation while authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
