Seconds Before Impact, Air Canada Pilot Made a Move That Saved 74 Lives

What began as a routine landing at LaGuardia Airport quickly turned into a scene of chaos, as a last-second action from the cockpit may have prevented an even greater tragedy. Late Sunday night, an Air Canada Express flight collided with a fire truck shortly after touching down, prompting authorities to shut down the airport for several hours. Officials later confirmed that both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the incident, while two fire officers sustained injuries. More than 70 passengers were onboard at the time of the crash.

Passengers described the frightening moment when the situation suddenly escalated. One traveler recalled that roughly 30 seconds after landing, the aircraft lurched forward unexpectedly. Moments later, a loud bang echoed through the cabin, followed by the unsettling sensation of the plane sliding sideways. At first, many passengers were confused, unsure of what had just occurred. Within seconds, however, the realization set in, and panic began to spread as people grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Amid the fear and confusion, passengers later pointed to one critical detail — a final maneuver by the pilot. According to several accounts, the pilot engaged reverse thrust just moments before the collision. That split-second decision may have reduced the aircraft’s speed and softened the impact, potentially preventing more severe injuries or loss of life among those onboard. In the aftermath, many passengers described the pilots as heroes, crediting their actions with helping to limit the damage.

One of the pilots was later identified as a 30-year-old from Quebec who had pursued aviation from a young age. Family members shared that he began flying at just 16 years old and remained deeply passionate about aviation throughout his life. Those who knew him described his dedication and commitment to flying, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.

Air traffic control recordings captured the tense moments leading up to the collision. Urgent instructions were reportedly issued to stop a vehicle on the runway, followed by confusion and a sudden silence after impact. Emergency crews quickly responded, rushing to the scene as operations at LaGuardia came to a standstill. Passengers were eventually evacuated, shaken but safe, while investigators began piecing together what went wrong — a sobering reminder of how quickly an ordinary flight can turn into an unexpected disaster.
