🔥 BREAKING: Romania Scrambles F-16 Jets After Explosive-Laden Maritime Drone Is Found Near Black Sea Gas Project
BUCHAREST, Romania – Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets after a small maritime drone was discovered drifting near the strategically important Neptun Deep offshore gas project in the Black Sea, triggering a rapid military and explosive-ordnance response. The unmanned vessel was reported by a commercial ship at approximately 6:28 a.m. local time on Aug. 20 after being spotted several hundred meters from the Neptun Alpha platform. The site is located roughly 80 nautical miles east of Constanța, inside Romania’s exclusive economic zone, according to the Romanian Ministry of National Defence. Because of the drone’s proximity to critical energy infrastructure and offshore personnel, Romanian authorities immediately deployed two Air Force F-16s to investigate the situation and secure the surrounding area.
One of the fighter jets fired its onboard cannon at the unmanned vessel, striking the target but failing to destroy it completely. Romanian authorities subsequently dispatched a Coast Guard vessel carrying an explosive-ordnance disposal team from the Naval Forces to examine the damaged craft. Romania’s Defense Ministry later confirmed that the maritime drone was carrying an explosive charge. Officials said information gathered from the F-16 aircraft, including tracking data, was analyzed alongside details collected by the crew of the responding vessel. That assessment confirmed that the incident involved a single unmanned craft. Romanian explosive-ordnance disposal specialists subsequently neutralized the device safely, according to the ministry.
The discovery of an explosive payload raised concerns because the drone had been found close to the Neptun Alpha platform, a major component of Romania’s offshore energy infrastructure. Any detonation near the facility could have endangered workers, disrupted operations or damaged critical equipment. No casualties or damage to the offshore platform were reported in connection with the incident.
Security Concerns in Black Sea Region
The incident occurred amid heightened security concerns in the Black Sea, where Russia’s war against Ukraine has increased the risks facing commercial shipping, coastal states and energy infrastructure. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță said authorities contacted Ukraine through a direct communication channel. Ukraine reportedly confirmed that the drone did not belong to its forces. Romanian officials have not publicly established who launched the maritime drone, where it originated or how it reached the area near the gas platform.
President Nicușor Dan criticized what he described as irresponsible incidents and said Romania would remain vigilant while working with its NATO partners. Russia has not publicly accepted responsibility for the drone discovered near Neptun Deep. The latest episode followed other security incidents in the same area. Earlier in August, Romanian naval explosive-ordnance divers destroyed two Gerbera-type unmanned aerial systems found drifting near the Neptun Deep perimeter. Ukrainian authorities again reportedly confirmed that those systems were not Ukrainian.
Romania’s Energy Infrastructure and Strategic Importance
The repeated discoveries have drawn attention to the vulnerability of offshore energy facilities in the Black Sea. Neptun Deep is being developed jointly by OMV Petrom and Romgaz and is expected to begin natural-gas production in 2027. The project is projected to increase Romania’s domestic gas output and strengthen the country’s position in the regional energy market. Romania’s location on NATO’s southeastern flank, combined with its proximity to the war in Ukraine, has exposed the country to a growing range of maritime, aerial and infrastructure-related security challenges. The latest incident demonstrated the importance of rapid detection, aerial surveillance and specialized explosive-disposal capabilities in protecting offshore facilities. Romanian authorities continue to monitor the surrounding waters and coordinate with military and NATO partners as they work to safeguard energy infrastructure, commercial shipping and personnel operating in the Black Sea.
