Alabama Gov Hospitalized After Procedure To Remove Fluid From Lung

Kay Ivey was hospitalized Tuesday after undergoing what officials described as a minor medical procedure to remove fluid that had been placing pressure on her lung, according to a statement released by her office.

The procedure came after several weeks of discomfort and recent episodes of shortness of breath. Following continued symptoms, Ivey consulted her primary care physician, who recommended further evaluation. That assessment ultimately led to the decision to proceed with treatment.

She is currently being monitored at Baptist Medical Center South as a precaution. Officials emphasized that the situation was not considered an emergency and described the procedure as routine and minor.

In its statement, the governor’s office said Ivey chose to act promptly so she could recover in time to continue her responsibilities during the ongoing legislative session. While no specific discharge date has been announced, officials indicated she is expected to make a full recovery.

A spokesperson also confirmed that Ivey remains in communication with her staff while focusing on her recovery. Messages of support quickly followed, including from Steve Marshall and Brian Kemp, both of whom expressed confidence in her recovery and shared prayers and well wishes.

Ivey, 81, has previously faced significant health challenges. In 2019, she announced she was undergoing radiation treatment for lung cancer. By 2020, her office confirmed that she was cancer-free, marking a major milestone in her recovery.

As she recuperates, officials said there are no significant changes planned for her schedule beyond the immediate recovery period. Her office added that additional updates will be provided as her condition improves and she prepares to return fully to her duties.
