Trump Admin Freezes Minnesota Medicaid Funds Amid Fraud Concerns

Vice President JD Vance, alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced a temporary suspension of $259 million in Medicaid payments to Minnesota. This decision by the Trump administration stems from widespread concerns over welfare fraud within the state’s low-income healthcare program, following a recent audit. Vance, tasked by President Donald Trump to lead a national “war on fraud,” emphasized that the freeze aims to compel Minnesota to responsibly manage “the American people’s tax dollars” and seriously address fraudulent activities.

The suspension follows intense scrutiny on Minnesota after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed billions of dollars had been illicitly diverted from Medicaid-funded services, including daycare and housing assistance. The DHS report cited a “too trusting mindset” and a system prioritizing payment facilitation over safeguarding funds. Dr. Oz had previously engaged Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, requesting a “corrective action plan,” but deemed the state’s response “inadequate.” Minnesota is part of a larger White House investigation targeting several Democratic states, including CaliforniaColorado, and New York, for similar audits.
