Omar’s Husband’s Business Faces Expanded Scrutiny Amid Wealth Surge
Republican lawmakers are pressing for an expanded investigation into the overseas business activities of Tim Mynett, husband of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). The inquiry, led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), is now potentially reaching Somalia, Kenya, and the United Arab Emirates. This escalation follows scrutiny over a dramatic increase in the couple’s reported combined wealth, with Republicans questioning if foreign business dealings or investors contributed to this substantial growth. Comer has demanded Mynett provide documents related to his international travel, communications, and ventures through his firm, Rose Lake Capital, by a recent deadline, focusing on activities in these three countries.
The investigation specifically targets Rose Lake Capital’s proposed solar energy ventures in East Africa, including discussions in Somalia and Kenya. Records show a $10,699 air ticket to Dubai for a partner from Mynett’s firm after business talks there. Comer’s February 5 letter explicitly sought “all documents and communications” from Rose Lake Capital LLC or Mynett’s former winery, eStCru LLC, concerning travel to the UAE, Somalia, or Kenya, or efforts to solicit business in those regions. An Omar spokesperson has dismissed these efforts as “politically motivated,” while lawmakers have hinted the House Ethics Committee might take jurisdiction.
The political pressure on Rep. Omar has intensified with comments from former President Donald Trump. Trump has publicly accused Omar of potential fraud, linking her to “19 Billion Dollars in Minnesota Somalia Fraud” related to public assistance funds. He has advocated for her imprisonment or even deportation back to Somalia, calling her a “constant complainer who hates the USA.” These highly charged remarks, made in the context of investigations into large-scale fraud in Minnesota, underscore the contentious political environment surrounding Rep. Omar and the probe into her husband’s finances.
