23-Year-Old Suspect Arrested After Deadly Hospital Shooting…
A 23-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday evening in Philadelphia in connection with a deadly shooting at a hospital in nearby Delaware earlier that day, according to law enforcement officials. The arrest came hours after a violent incident that left one person dead and another injured, prompting a large-scale police response and a multi-state search for the suspect. Authorities said the shooting occurred in the afternoon at ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. The incident was first reported at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos, who provided initial details during a press briefing.
Police responded to the scene and located two victims inside the facility. However, the shooter had already fled by the time officers arrived. Officials did not immediately release the identities of the victims or disclose the condition of the surviving individual, citing privacy concerns and respect for the families involved. The lack of detailed information in the early stages of the investigation contributed to heightened public concern as authorities worked to secure the area and determine what had occurred.
Following the attack, law enforcement agencies launched an extensive search for the suspect, who was believed to have left the scene shortly after the shooting. More than two hours after an initial evening update, police confirmed that a suspect had been located and taken into custody in Philadelphia, roughly 30 miles west-southwest of Wilmington. The individual was later identified as John Wallace-Bey of New Castle.
Targeted Incident Under Investigation
Investigators described the incident as a “targeted, isolated event,” indicating that, based on preliminary findings, the shooting was not believed to be random. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and they cautioned that additional information may emerge as evidence is reviewed and witnesses are interviewed. Charges and extradition proceedings were reported as pending at the time of the announcement.
The shooting prompted a significant emergency response at the hospital, with staff members forced to shelter in place as law enforcement officers systematically cleared the building floor by floor. Officials said the situation created widespread disruption inside the medical facility, as patients and employees were temporarily locked down for safety. Wilmington Mayor John Carney described the incident as deeply traumatic for the community, noting that hospital workers were “barricaded in rooms across the hospital” while police secured the premises.
He called it “a terrible day for our city,” reflecting the emotional impact of the violence on both the healthcare workers and residents. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer also acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, revealing that his wife, Dr. Lauren Meyer, was at the downtown hospital reporting for work when the shooting occurred. Despite the chaos, officials praised hospital personnel for their response under pressure, describing them as individuals who continued to carry out lifesaving duties amid an active emergency. Law enforcement officials reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and that more details will be released as they become available.
