Ohio Farm Inferno: 6,000 Hogs Perish in Catastrophic Blaze
A “catastrophic” wind-swept blaze swept through Fine Oak Farms, a hog production facility in Union Township, Madison County, Ohio, on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The devastating fire, located west of Columbus, resulted in the tragic deaths of approximately 6,000 hogs and pigs. Chief Brian Bennington of the Central Townships Joint Fire District described the scene as “difficult and heartbreaking,” noting that two of the facility’s five large agricultural buildings were engulfed upon arrival, with three ultimately destroyed.
Fire crews faced significant challenges in controlling the inferno due to strong windy conditions that severely hampered suppression efforts. Despite the adverse circumstances, firefighters managed to save one barn and approximately 1,500 hogs. No human injuries were reported in the incident. This event adds to a growing number of large-scale barn fires contributing to the loss of millions of animals in recent years.
